Ghost town Jánovas

Ghost town Jánovas

In the 1960s, the inhabitants of the Spanish town of Jánovas were forced to leave their houses in order to build a reservoir and dam which were never actually built.

Their departure was enforced with a heavy hand. On 4 February 1966, employees of power company Iberduero stormed into Jánovas' little school. He dragged the teacher by her hair and evicted the traumatized children.

Not only the school was asked to scramble up. Residents who refused to leave were regularly rocked by explosions: houses dynamited. The bullying behavior made living here almost impossible. Still, the village remained inhabited until 1984.

And all for nothing, as plans for the dam were officially buried in 2005. A few couples have returned to the ghost village and live in a handful of refurbished houses. They hope to revitalize Jánovas.

Lacort

Jánovas is far from unique in the Solana Valley: just a few kilometres away, the ghost village of Lacort graces the hills. Same picture here. Ruined houses, streets paved with thistles and an empty church.
