With a new batch of wonder weapons, the so-called "Vergeltungswaffen", the Germans wanted to turn the tide at the end of World War II. They developed the unmanned V1 aircraft, the V2 rocket and the V3 super cannon.
In 2005, the concrete launch pad of a German V1 launch base from the Second World War was found in the Vrijbos in Houthulst.
