Air watchtower Nieuw Namen

Air watchtower from the Cold War

During the Cold War, almost three hundred air watchtowers were scattered throughout the Netherlands to detect enemy aircraft.

Volunteers manned this example in the town of Nieuw Namen from 1953 to 1964, after which the buildings became somewhat redundant due to the arrival of radars and fighter jets instead of noisy propeller planes.

The air watchtower of Nieuw Namen was given a new function: locating possible impacts of atomic bombs. That is why an air raid shelter was dug nearby. The tower has not been manned since 1980.
