Lommersweiler tunnels

Height differences in the landscape, forests, or rivers? In the late nineteenth century, nothing could stop the construction of railway line 47 between Sankt Vith and Troisvierges in Luxembourg. Along with railway line 48, this route formed the historic Vennbahn, where iron ores and coal were transported.

Railway line 47 from St Vith first crossed the river Braunlauf via a viaduct. Then, the line continued through the more than 100-metre-long Lommersweiler Tunnel, which was constructed in 1888. Thus, the railway cut the hillside.

Double track

In 1908, the line between St Vith and Lommerweiler was double-tracked to cope with the heavy train traffic and military transport. To this end, a new viaduct was built above the Braunlauf river, and a second tunnel was drilled parallel to the existing one.

The section between Sankt Vikth and Lommersweiler remained in use until 1954. In the direction of Reuland, traffic was already stopped in 1944 after the dynamiting of the Hemmeres brick viaduct. The destruction made railway traffic impossible.

Bats

The oldest tunnel was made accessible to walkers and cyclists when the Vennbahn cycle path was built. The 125-metre-long tunnel from 1908 has been bricked up, giving bats shelter.

Lommersweiler railway station

About a hundred and fifty meters south, you leave the tunnel and reach Lommersweiler station. Only the platforms are still recognizable.
