Strépy-Thieu boat lift

Twenty years after construction started, the Strépy-Thieu boat lift lifted the first boats. Until 2016, it was the largest ship lift in the world.

In 1982, work began on the Strépy-Thieu boat lift, which bridges a height difference of 73 meters. On either side, cables drag the ship's barges vertically up or down. The ship lift replaced the four historic ship lifts along the Center Canal in one fell swoop.

Difficult construction

Its construction did not go without a hitch, and upon settlement, the lift turned out to be more expensive than planned. The stability of the subsurface, in particular, was a problem for the engineers.

All's well that ends: the first boat took off in 2002. It was the highest lift in the world for over a decade, until the Chinese put a 113-meter-high one into use at the Three Gorges Dam in September 2016.
