Railway line 73: Straight through the dunes

Railway line 73 connected the French port city of Dunkirk with the Belgian Adinkerke.

The approximately 17-kilometer-long route, which is becoming considerably overgrown from Zuydcoote to the border with Belgium, has not been used for years: the last freight train rumbled between the two countries in 2002, and a tourist train served the route until 1992.

In Leffrinckoucke, the tracks run parallel to the coastal strip through the dunes. A branch is also from the railway line to the nearby steel factory.

The next stop is Sanatorium Maritime de Zuydcoote station. La Ferme Nord from 1910, the farm near the station, had to supply the sanatorium at the time.

The station in the center of Zuydcoote (which now houses a pharmacist) and the railway crossing.

Two kilometers beyond Zuydcoote, railway line 73 arrives at Bray-Dunes station.

From Bray-Dunes, it is approximately 2.5 kilometers till you reach the Belgian border.

Demolition

Even though the railway line has not been used for years, the demolition of part of the track in 2014 by Belgian railway operator Infrabel caused protests. Just beyond the border in Adinkerke, where line 73 crosses the Duinhoekstraat, Infrabel replaced the tracks with a fresh layer of asphalt.

More specifically, the "Trekhaak 73" working group, which wants to promote public transport in the region, sounded the alarm: the demolition jeopardizes the plans ever to reopen the railway line, which railway manager Infrabel denies.

Beyond the border, the track continues straight for another 3 kilometers until Adinkerke, where you can continue inland via De Panne railway station (still in use).
