KdF Prora

Hitler's megalomaniac Nazihotel KdF Prora

In 1935, Adolf Hitler gave the go-ahead for the construction of a megalomaniac holiday colony in Prora on the German island of Rügen.

Anyone visiting the island will find it difficult to miss the hotel: the structure near the beach is 4.5 kilometers long and consists of 2 wings of 4 blocks each.

The giant hotel has 10,000 double rooms with a view of the Baltic Sea and was intended as a holiday resort for the working class. According to Hitler, happier and more relaxed workers were more likely to reach outstanding achievements.

Strength through Joy

It is no coincidence that the complex was named "Kraft durch Freude" (German for "Strength through Joy"), or KdF Prora.

Stairs lead holidaymakers to the beach and the sea bridge in the Baltic Sea.

WWII

But in 1940, before the structure was completed, World War II broke out. It remained unfinished. The dream of the holiday paradise shattered: until 1945, the reception of Hotel Prora only received refugees.

After the war, soldiers from the Soviets and the East German GDR were given shelter there. The complex has been empty since 1992.

Plans and renovations

In 1994, Prora was protected as a monument, but that cannot slow down the decline. Only in 2011 did the tide turn, when a block was renovated into a youth hotel.

There are also plans for the other blocks: the Berlin project developer Irisgerdwil wants to accommodate 161 new residential units in an empty wing with the "Neue Prora" project.
