Traces of the Cockerills in Stolberg

The Cockerillstraße in Stolberg, Germany, already reveals that the Cockerill family also established itself near Aachen in the early nineteenth century.

It was not surprising that both brothers, Charles James and John Cockerill, each married a daughter of Philipp Heinrich Pastor from Aachen, a cloth and needle manufacturer.

While John Cockerill was thriving in Seraing, Charles James Cockerill moved permanently to Aachen, Germany, in the 1820s.

Coal mine

In Stolberg, a neighboring municipality of Aachen, Charles James Cockerill built the Grube James coal mine named after him.

To dispose of the coal, he had the Cockerillstraße constructed, the only tangible trace of his coal mine.

Charles James Cockerill was also one of the founders of a glass factory that grew into a zinc factory a few decades later and today houses the Zinkhütter Hof Museum.

His younger brother, John Cockerill, was also active in Stolberg. He founded the Sankt Heinrich zinc factory there in the mid-1830s - at the height of his power. The factory must have been right next to his brother's coal mine.

Flywheel

In front of the museum is a flywheel with a diameter of about eleven meters that was rescued from the remains of Cockerill's zinc factory.

Factory inspection

Today, only the eighty-meter-high chimney of the former Zincoli factory next to the museum remains.

Although it is still an empty site of remains of rails and concrete foundations, plans are circulating to create a landscape park there.
