French Revolution

The Castillo de la Monta atop the 123-metre-high Monte Urgull has watched over the Spanish coastal city of San Sebastián since the 12th century. 

The Abbey of Aulne was founded around 637 on the wooded banks of the Sambre. Golden years and disaster succeeded for centuries, but the French Revolution dealt the abbey the final blow.

You bump into this brick obelisk at the edge of a forest in northern France. The monument was erected more than two centuries ago.

European heritage organization Europa Nostra has added the ruins of Charles of Lorraine's Palace in Mariemont to its shortlist of most endangered monuments in 2023.

In the valley of the River Thyle, a group of monks came together in 1146 to build the Villers Abbey.
